We present to your attention - MC Sha Rock from Funky 4+1
Lady Sha Rock aka Sharon Green is considered the first female MC and one of the female hip-hip icons who set standards of the flow for the future rap divas for the years to come. In the mid 70’s, when rap culture was just beginning to form, Sha Rock had her stage debut as the only girl in the male band Funky 4+1. Incidentally, the group was the first rap artist to appear on the American national television, i.e. Saturday Night Live, as well as the first rap artist to sign up with a record label.
Another success of Funky 4+1 was the 9-minute track That’s the Joint, which was selected as the best 80’s song by The Village Voice musical critic Robert Christgau.
Except for the impressive music career Sha Rock is famous for her social activism: she had worked in the US criminal justice system for many years as well as supervised educational and mentoring projects among teenagers.
For that matter, in April of 2013 Sha Rock was appointed the chief curator for the hip-hop culture literary collection at Cornell University library.
