If everyone approaches correctly we all will have a better perspective of our history.
"Alright. Very important topic that if everyone approaches correctly, not only will we all have a better perspective of our history, but we can also be able to draw a line when it comes to these titles cats keep giving themselves. And generations being claimed.
This post is kinda the aftermath of a debate that happened on another persons post where my aunt asked “what does Bboy mean”
A few cats came up and gave different versions or “their own perspective” a few of us, me included chimed it with things we have learned from our elders.
Of course since I’m an educator by nature and by trade, I go on and give something more than a one word even went as far as tagging cats like Trac2, Charlie rock and even mr wiggles who some folks don’t know long before he was popping he was a Bboy first and foremost going back as far as the end of first generation going into second generation. And a good student or good educator always list his/her references.
Now, the word “generation” has gotten tricky since a lot of pioneers and lie-o-neers alike have emerged out the wood work and have claimed to be doing things before what many of us call first generation. (Nigga twins, ZULU Kings, the Bronx boys, starchild larock” etc)
In an attempt to not tamper a timeline that had already sunken in globally, when teaching I refer to these brothers as the “pre-school” generation. Respectfully I put cats like salsa, Trixie, dancing Doug, poochie, el darado mIke, Cisco kid phase 2 etc.
This preschool generation, without a shadow of a doubt, are/were bboys in their own right, and there is no denying that they lit the fuse and inspired what we already came to know as the first generation.
Now, with that in mind, out of all the people that posted, this cat, who is so insignificant I can’t even remember his name, came at me side ways with the whole “there was cats before those you mentioned, I’m a Bboy, i was there blah blah blah”
Which quite frankly doesn’t prove anything. A cat could’ve been a spectator and remember some shit he saw and front like he a pioneer these days and most cats will bow down and call him legend (if he didn’t already call himself that, and those the ones you have to watch the ones who refer to themselves with prestige’s titles, that’s self grandeur and that’s text book narcissism). But anyways back to my point......
I simply stated that to say you started the dance I do, you have to show me something that even remotely looks like what I do. Every first generation cat I have met has gotten down and showed me something, nigga twins, Trac2 jojo, dxt, POW Wow, even whizzy wiz when he was 200 plus pounds showed me some shit. and wether these brothers were old, fat, outa shape, beer belly’s and metal implants, wether they were super slow or super wack, one thing was always evident amongst them all. And that’s A BBOY STYLE.
The nigga twins ain’t even touch the floor, kept it up top, and only went about 10 seconds. But the Bboy style was there and evident. I learned more about toprocks in those ten seconds than I have my whole existence as a Bboy. No lie no exaggeration.
I tried to explain something that I respectfully have kept to myself and have been waiting for the day I’m breathing the same air as all of even some of y’all. So I can drop my question.
Facebook is wack and I don’t believe in taking time to research, practice, do and do over an answer. (It’s why I have so many typos regularly) I prefer intimate over internet where the answer has to be on time in the spot and organic, not strategically erected. .
My question is this and it goes out to the pre-school generation.....
What exactly is it that y’all did as far as dance and dance moves. I’ve heard stories, I’ve heard history, but if this shit was about talking and hearing we wouldn’t have to dance in the first place. This shit is about dancing and if you claim Bboy you show and prove period point blank.
Also can y’all post a video 10 seconds even as a demonstration of what y’all did exactly, names of moves. (All dances have names and names of moves since the
beginning of time so I don’t fall for “oh we didn’t have names we just did it” bullshit.
Far back as the nigga twins and other first gen bboys had names like the Frankenstein, the Dracula, the truck driver the popeye style, the daffy duck etc.
Again there is no doubt that the pre-school generation was a heavy influence to what bboys do (breaking) just like we all learned that breaking was also inspired by rocking (uprock) but bboys and rockers alike know and understand that they are TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT DANCES. hence two totally different terms... Bboy & Rocker.
I’m sorry to say this but unless what you do or did is reminiscent to what bboys did and continue doing to this day, you can not say you started my dance or that you were doing my dance before me. Period.
Again we all acknowledge many dancers and dances as a vital and influential part of our development, but the meat of a bboys dance is FOOTWORK. Not just a sweep here and there, not just a James brown half sweep, but FOOTWORK -linear or circular patterns done with the feet and legs while supporting yourself with your hands usually starting from a squatting position.
Bboys were inspired by hustle dancers, freestyle dancers, Rock dancers, martial arts movies, and comic books. But we don’t call our inspirations bboys although we hold them all in high regards. But the ground zero of breaking are the ground moves. And if you weren’t doing anything similar to what we do ON THE FLOOR. you wasn’t a Bboy.
(Before anyone responds by way of clicking a keyboard keep in mind one thing, if I call out a Bboy I am either going to get smoked by him or smoke him. I’m calling out all y’all using the Bboy title, and claiming to have started what I do)"
